The Gap Between Knowing and Doing Is Costing You More Than You Think

Stock Market Starters Blog/The Gap Between Knowing and Doing Is Costing You More Than You Think

Here's a question I want you to actually sit with for a second.

Not the highlight reel version. Not the social media version. In reality, right now, if you picture your life five years from now on the exact same path you're on today, with the same habits and the same income... what do you see?

Same apartment? Same job with a small raise? A little more money coming in and a little more money going out?

If that picture makes you uncomfortable, then good. Hold onto that feeling. Because it's about to become useful.

The Treadmill Nobody Warns You About

A few years ago, I was in that exact spot. I was in college, working part-time, showing up, putting in the hours, doing everything you're told to do if you want to get ahead.

And I felt completely stuck.

Not lazy. Not apathetic. Just stuck. Like I was running hard on a treadmill going nowhere, and the treadmill just kept moving.

Work, get paid, cover bills, repeat. And somewhere in the back of my mind a voice kept asking: is this really it? Is this actually the plan?

The thing is, I wasn't sitting around doing nothing. I was reading. I was listening to audiobooks on the drive to school. I was learning about the stock market, about money, about what it actually takes to build a life that doesn't depend on a paycheck to survive.

I had knowledge. I had information. I had desire.

But I hadn't done the one thing that actually changes everything.

I hadn't started investing.

The System Was Never Broken - It Was Built This Way

Think about this for a second. You go through 13 years of school. And in all of that time, unless you specifically go looking for it, you never get a single class on how to own an asset that makes you money while you sleep.

They taught you how to write a resume. How to show up on time. How to be useful to someone else's vision.

They never taught you how to make your money work for you.

That system you grew up in? It wasn't broken. It was working exactly the way it was designed to work. It was just designed to produce employees, not owners.

And once you see that, you can't unsee it.

Here's the trap I almost got stuck in, though. I thought if I learned enough, read enough books, listened to enough podcasts, and understood enough theory... the action would just take care of itself.

It doesn't. It never does.

There's a gap between what you know and what you actually do. And that gap is where most people spend their entire lives. Not just lazy people. Smart people. Educated people. People who know they should be investing but haven't started yet.

Every Day You Wait, the Gap Gets Wider

The only way to cross that gap is to actually start. Not when you know more. Not when you've read the next book. Not when you feel ready or the timing lines up perfectly.

The only way across is to start. Even when it's small. Even when you're scared. Even if, like me, all you have is $50.

Because here's the thing: every single day you stay on the side of the gap where you know you should be doing it but you're not, that gap gets wider.

And I want to be clear about something. It's not your fault the system is built this way. Schools are built this way. Nobody taught you this stuff. But even though it's not your fault, it is your problem. Because every single day that passes without your money working for you is a day you can never get back.

A dollar invested 10 years ago is worth far more than a dollar you invest today. But a dollar you invest today is worth way more than a dollar you invest five years from now when you finally feel ready... And that ready feeling, by the way, probably never actually comes.

The cost of waiting isn't just money. It's years of your life. And years of becoming the person you need to be to actually get the result you want.

The Night Everything Changed

I remember exactly when this shifted for me. It was one evening at work. Almost dark outside. I was driving a forklift at my part-time job at Tractor Supply with one AirPod in my ear.

That was the moment everything changed.

It wasn't another book. It wasn't more theory. It was the thing that nobody had actually told me to do. The one move that puts a real financial foundation under your feet.

And that was the reason I built the entire investing system I use today.

If you want to find out what that looks like, there's a link below that goes to my banana farm video. It walks you through the whole thing step by step and there's actually a really fun reason it's called the banana farm (hint: it involves a video game called Bloons Tower Defense 5 and it completely changed the way I think about money).
